How It Works - Guidelines for Setting Your Website Online
Here's How this whole Thing Really Works
|
Socially
Whenever you go to your next party, meeting, network gathering, or social event, just take along your personal
business card. Besides your name, address, and phone numbers, your card also has the web address
of your online website and email
address. While you are talking about things, anything, just hand them your card, explaining that the .com address is where
they can find out much more detailed information about you, your interests, your business, whatever. It's a GREAT way to network,
AND collect email addresses (more about that later, the importance of collecting email addresses).
I mean, how many times have you been out and about, wishing you had a way to tell people about your online presence when
the talk got around to anything about the Internet. Let's face it, people will NOT remember your website address or email
address without your having to write it down. And since most everyone is in the habit of carrying a business card anyway, then
this becomes a no brainer. Instead of handing them your job-related business card, hand them your personal card. Your personal card
IS your gateway to your website. I'll talk
about getting FREE cards a little later.
Or, somebody needs to search the internet, specifically for something your business offers. They go to the search engine
(Google, Yahoo, etc.) and type in something like "plumbers in Richardson, Texas" and your business pops up on the first search
page. That search result can drive business right to your front door.
All you need is a URL or web address, an actual
website, an email account, and personal cards. We can and will help you:
- Help you register your domain name (website address or URL). All you need is what you'd like to call it (e.g., www.your-websiteonline.com).
- Do the setup for your new domain space.
- Do the setup for your new email account (with forwarding if need be).
- Set up your actual website.
- Include the setup to collect opt-in email addresses.
- Set up additional email accounts (if you'd like to include other family or business members on your domain name account).
- Set up your email program (e.g., Eudora, Outlook, Outlook Express) to download your email messages from the POP servers.
In effect, I can act as a hands-on consultant, helping you to set up your online account. I do charge for this, but it
ain't much considering the time I can save you. See my What Does It Cost for more details.
For your own personal cards to hand out, go to www.vistaprint.com. They've got a free card option. All you do is pay for the shipping. Now that's a deal.

TECHNICALLY
We can help you set up your account and build your website using either our own hosting service or yours, depending on the option you have chosen. We also help you set up your new email account(s)
for either POP3 access or internet access, or both. All in all, we're going to get uou up and running.
We will also include a way for your site to collect email addresses for all those who visit your site. This will require
the use of an autoresponder. For a more comprehensive discussion about autoresponsers, refer to our site map.
We can also offer you some basic SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, for your new site. This work effort is what attracts
the attention of the search engines, and helps to get you listed on the first or second page of someone's search query. Kevin
Costner's character said "Build it and they will come." With websites, that ain't gonna happen.
You've got to make your presence known on the internet, and SEO does just that.
If by now you are totally confused, I have a couple of resources that can really help you out, and they are both
free. They take the confusion out of this whole thing.
The first is a comprehensive course offered by one of my mentors, Martin Avis. He's put out a comprehensive course specifically
for newbies. Go to IM Kickstart Daily to get a look see.
The next is an ongoing website I've developed to help out folks searching for ways to make money online. Although not
specifically geared towards a website presence, a lot of the tenets are the same, and worthwhile checking out. It's called
the Internet Retirement System. Especially check out the Free Download Page.

HOW TO I GET PAID?
Basically, I'll invoice you once you're satisfied, and you can pay by either check,
money order, or PayPal. In order for me to get started, I'll need an email from you stating your intentions. (We'll
worry about the website layout and contents later.)State which option you'd like to persue. I'll email you back with a clear
delineation of the work to be performed. Those 2 emails will form the basis of our contractual agreement (along with
any subsequent emails that may modify the work to be performed).
So, depending on your option, I'll just invoice you, and
you can send a check, money order, or use PayPal. I cannot accept credit cards right now (except if you use a PayPal account).
If you use PayPal, my email account address for payment (verified) is dick@shagmiser.com . Go to the What Does it Cost page for a full explanation of the options and prices.
