How to be a Bona Fide Expert in any Niche

Home 2009 IM Checklist Niche Expert Steps

Many people think they do not know enough about any one niche, to make money from it. But that's OK. Becoming an expert in your chosen niche is easier than you think. You can become an expert even if you know zilch about your market.

Here are the steps to becoming a bona fide expert in any niche, and cashing in on it...

Choose a subject matter close to your heart or one that gives you great pleasure. Write down whatever you know about this topic on a piece of paper.

Visualize what questions someone would ask in your chosen niche. Then write all these questions down on the same piece of paper.

For example, let's say you love fly fishing and you've caught at least a few fish in your day. Someone who is new to the sport might ask...

"What is the easiest way to fly cast without looking like a complete rookie?"

"What is the easiest fly casting rod for beginners to use?"

"What does it take to tie my own flies?"

"Where could I get all the supplies I need, without overpaying?"

Visit ehow.com and enter your niche into the search bar. You'll get a large list of how to articles on different aspects of your niche.

For instance, when entering "fly fish" I received articles titles:

How to salt water fly fish.

How to fly fish for bluegill.

How to fly fish with a wet fly.

How to fly fish with a dry fly.

Take some time and read some of the articles that interest you. You're now slowly becoming an expert!

Naturally, you can't do this with every topic, such as brain surgery for instance, but you can for most. All you have to do is spend a few days learning and you'll know far more than the average person about your topic.

Remember, even the best experts are wrong quite often -- just tune into any show about the stock market for proof! (Almost every expert still agrees that mutual funds are safe and that buy and hold is the best investment strategy. Try to convince the average 60 yr. old investor who just lost half of their "safe" portfolio in a matter of months... Oops, I digress...)

Once you've "rounded out your knowledge" in your chosen niche, start writing your own short reports about different topics within your new area of expertise. The reports can be anywhere from 100 to 1000 words.

Answer questions that people would ask, and write like you would speak. Make it friendly, inject humor, make it easy to read.

Go to blogger.com or wordpress.com and set up a basic blog. Or, if you prefer, set up a lens at squidoo.com - these are simple tools that will let you start sharing your knowledge. Or if you want to put up a site like mine, grab a website template and go that route.

Now start posting a new "report" every few days. Don't worry about sounding like an expert right away. It is OK and even more desirable in some niches to share your learning experience as it goes along. That's what I did when I started my business. I simply told people the results of different Internet marketing strategies I tried, and people loved reading about it.

Next start sharing your information in the form of short tips, at other blogs and forums in your niche. This will start a flow of traffic to your blog or lens. Be sure to leave a backlink to your site, and this will get you listed in search engines.

As you start to build your traffic, it won't be too long before your audience will recognize you as an expert.

Give your best reports to a ghostwriter on scriptlance, guru.com or findafreelancer and ask them to compile an ebook for you.

There are many writers out there who would would just love a project like this and it will give you something to give away or sell, without you having to do very much yourself.

Don't be put off by thinking you're deceitful by not exactly writing it yourself, you're not. There are thousands of projects, just like this example, that have made millionaires by having others compile the information for them in some sense.

Once you have an ebook of your own, get a nice 3D ecover designed for it and start giving it away at your blog or lens. That's right, give it away for free. This will grow an opt-in email list for you. This list will be your bread and butter, so be sure to use a professional web based solution such as Aweber to handle list signups, unsubscribes and follow-ups for you. Mail to your growing opt-in list regularly. You can send out a weekly email newsletter or simply send a notice every time you make a new blog or lens post. The email can simply tell them what you wrote about and to give them a link to the new info.

Start making money. This is the part many people do not understand. But it is not as difficult as most folks make it out to be. The best ways to make money with your newfound expert status are as follows...

Recommend products and services as an affiliate.

You can do this in your blog posts and via email you send to your opt-in list. You can also do this in your autoresponder series. In fact, every time you get decent results when recommending a product or service, add an email to your autoresponder series so all new subscribers get the recommendation. These little acts add up to big money over time. And it's OK if you're not comfortable with pitching goods and services. Just write in a friendly tone such as: "I just got done tying a fly with the new kit from XYZ company. Wow, what a time saver. Here's a link in case you've been spending too much time at your workbench."

Sell advertising.

Yes, you can sell outbound links at your blog, lens or website, to other sites within your niche. There are sites in every niche desperate for links to their site. I get offers all the time for hundreds of dollars a month just for placing a link at my site. You can also sell classified or sponsorship advertising in your weekly email newsletter if you want.

Create a product you can sell.

Remember how easy it was to have that ebook made for you? Now that you've been at it a while, you could compile all your short reports into a bigger ebook that you can sell. Or you could create an entire course if you wanted. There are countless ways the experts package their information into marketable format. Use your imagination and come up with something you can sell for much more than a $19 ebook. Look around on the web to see how other experts are doing it.

Work with others in related niches.

The Internet marketing experts call this joint venturing. It's really as simple as recommending someone's product, and in in return having them do the same for you. You can pay each other commissions if you want, or keep it really simple and swap recommendations. Either way you'll build traffic and sales. Another way to joint venture is to partner with someone in your niche and develop a product or service together. Again, use your imagination and have fun!

Everyone has expert status in them, it's just a matter of getting it out.
