What You Do - Guidelines for Setting Your Website Online

For the most part, you just sit back and dream up what you want your new domain name to be!

For the Register Only Option 1, just:
1. Send us an email with your various choices for domain names. Remember, a domain name MUST BE UNIQUE to the Internet. So jump over to Web.Com right now to test your various ideas for a domain name. I'll need, at a minimum:
  • Domain Name preferences
  • Your current ISP email address
  • Your preference for Option 1

2. While you're there, go ahead and register a domain name if you find something you like and it is available. We'll have to do it eventually, and you'll be ahead of the game. Choose the Personal Identity Account option. This gives you a SMPT/POP email account along with your domain registration. Remember, this fee is separate and apart from my fee. If you do register, remember to include that name in your email to me.

3. Once we've set up your new domain name and email address, order your personal cards (we found them free at www.vistaprint.com) making sure you specify your new domain name as the web address and email address on the cards.
4. For option 1, after we've (or you've) registered your new domain name, we'll both have to know your assigned logon and password. Once we're finished, you'll want to change it. In the interim, we should keep it to something simple.
5. Once registered, we'll go to the Email server for your new domain name, and under preferences, choose email forwarding and have all the mail for that account forwarded to your main ISP mail account (e.g., your-name@yourisp.com).

For the Register & Web Building Option 2, I'll need:

  • Everything I mentioned in Option 1.
  • Content (in Word) for your Home Page.
  • Information for your About Me page.
  • Contact information for your Contact Page (name, address, etc.). I would NOT include phone number.
  • What you'd like to see on your Optional Content Page 1 - and its navagation name.
  • What you'd like to see on your Optional Content Page 1 - and its navagation name. In both cases, keep them short.
  • The style preference(s) for each page. I suggest keeping the same style for each page. It identifies consistency and looks more professional. (See some style examples so you'll see what I mean.)
  • Domain Direct's web builder also includes Password Protection for the entire site, or a specific page. Indicate your protection preferences (password protected or not) for each page.
  • You can send pictures in a subsequent email, especially if you're on a dial-up connection.
  • Anything else you can think of I haven't covered here.

We'll send you back a confirming email stating everything, the work to be performed, our price, and whatever logons and passwords we may have already developed. Plus an estimate on a completion date. No bad, huh?

Again, don't forget to order your new personal cards from Vista Print.
